Catagories, Tags, and Inventories, Oh My!!

Well, with the holiday shopping season almost upon us (Black Friday and Cyber Monday to start it off!), if you are like me, and you are in charge of a website, you are looking at all the ways to make sure your client remains viable in search engines such as: Google, Bing, Yahoo, and others.

I have found the best way to do this is with SEO. Search Engine Optimization! This is going to be the new “buzzword” in marketing, digital marketing and social media marketing as time goes by. Now, I am in no way  an authority on SEO techniques. having just been involved in this emerging field for  a little over four months! what I have noticed through various articles and forums that I have read is that SEO visibility is the key.

And along with that key comes having your online inventory in the correct categories, with good descriptions, and apply the correct tags.

TAGS

You may ask yourself “Just what is a tag?”. Yes, it is a school-yard game, but it is also a tool that can be used to help buyers find your merchandise when they search on the Internet. Tags (or Metadata), is very useful in SEO for they are assigned to a piece of information (such as an Internet bookmark, digital image, or computer file). This kind of metadata helps describe an item and allows it to be found again by browsing or searching. Tags are generally chosen informally and personally by the item’s creator or by its viewer, depending on the system. (description taken from Wikipedia).

So, for instance, say you are selling t-shirts over the Internet. You would write a good description for the t-shirt and then think of metadata that would set you apart from other t-shirt vendors online. Your metadata may contain the name of your store, the city you are in, or anything unique about your t-shirts. Then when a search is ran, BOOM! (lol) there you are in the search results! People are finding and purchasing your t-shirts and before you know it, you are retiring to a small island in the Bahamas.

As I stated earlier, I am no authority on SEO, or metadata, as I am just starting with a couple of clients myself. But, take time and take a look at your clients categories, inventories, and metadata. And do them the favor of seeing what van be done to increase their visibility in Internet search engines. I guarantee you they will thank you for it!

And now, I have to go that very task for my clients!

Take care everyone and have fun!!
