Making music

Now that the Holidays and the craziness are over (for just a moment here), I have finally had the chance to play around with some new apps downloaded from the Windows 10 app store. One of those apps is called Music Maker Jam.

Music Maker Jam allows you to take the pre-loaded music loops in the program and rearrange them to suit your musical taste and/or ideas. It is nothing professional in any way, shape or form, but, it is something fun to play around with.

If you would like to listen to my first tune programmed in Music Maker Jam, just click on the link below to listen.

If you enjoy it, you can share it with other people who may like it also. And if you search on SoundCloud for the song “927PM”, you can also click the like button and share from there. Thanks for listening, hope you do enjoy the track, and there will be more coming.

Branding Your Business on Social Media

Starting your own small business can be a wonderful, exciting, and yet often very scary task! And getting your business noticed, can be an even bigger task. There are so many ways to gain attention for your business and your brand that it can be a job in and of itself to figure out the best way to get that done.

Be Consistent!

For me, I think the first rule in “branding” with your business is to be consistent! If you have a company logo, be sure to use that photo in every internet profile that you create. Taking that small step can help potential customers associate that logo with your name and what services that you have to offer to them. And be sure to follow that up with the naming of your social media accounts. Strive to stay as close to your business name as you can. For some platforms, it may be needed to shorten the name to confirm with their particular naming schemes, but do try your best to have screen name reflect the name of the business.

Which platform for my business?

This can be a crucial question for many a small business.  Because all of the platforms have their own merits as to what they can offer to a small business. First a word of caution: When creating an account on any social media platform, always check to see if there is a “business option” available on that platform. A social media business page will almost certainly offer you better ways to engage, track, and communicate with your customers over the “personal page “option.
When choosing your social media platform, take a look and see what your are comfortable with! Facebook has the “comfort level” that brings the most people on-board. You may already have a personal page, so using it create a business page would not be a stretch for most. If your business is more of a visual medium, try taking a look at platforms such as Instagram, or consider Pinterest if your business is that of arts and crafts, or a restaurant! For the more adventurous, open a YouTube channel for your business to post “how-to” videos.

Location, Location, Location!

For many small business owners today, sometimes the task can be getting noticed. Many consumers will just check for a business on their smartphone using Google Maps, Search, or Yellow Pages. A simple step many business owners forget to take can help them in search engine results. That simple trick is “verification”! If you google the phrase – “Google for Business” you will be given a link to where you can actually verify all the information about your business to make sure that it is correct! You will also be given the option to receive a postcard from Google with a verification number on it. This lets Google know that the business is in operation and ready to go! You can also follow the similar steps for Microsoft Bing. The folks over at Yelp and have a free basic listing that will allow you to offer customers coupons for percentage off at your business. And a Foursquare account will allow your customers to “check-in” and spread the word about your business.
There are a number of avenues for businesses both large and small to use social media and local services that are internet-based to “brand” and attract, retain, and engage customers and bring them to your door and to inquire about your services.  Taking just a little time to look over each one, can be one of the most important tasks a business owner can do!

e-Commerce week, then a great “Timey, Wimey” weekend!

Well, if anyone would have told me that upkeep on a e-Commerce site would be so time consuming, I would have laughed! Now, being in charge of one, I know how much time that kind of work can consume out of your week!

Fifteen pages and over a thousand items later, my clients web store is finally ready for the big shopping days of the holiday season. Even I didn’t expect it to take all week, but, I went through a physical count of all inventory to ensure that online and in-store inventory was the same. After that, came pricing, then meta-tags, then new background and finally choosing the right online forms of payment. Very exhausting, but now, all that work is done! So, for “Black Friday” & “Cyber Monday” it all comes down to just sales maintenance. Once an item sales online, pull it off store shelves, if it sales in-store, pull it off online inventory! For those of you who are interested, the website that I am helping to maintain is at . If you decide to check it out and find something you like, use promo code “shoemaze” (all one word) and this way you’ll get $10.00 off pretty much any item in the online store!

Also this week, here in Port Huron, we got our first snowfall of the season, and boy did it take everyone by surprise! Came with no warning. Bright and sunny Saturday morning and then by around 10:00 a.m., dark skies and snow!!! I had dropped by the store that morning to see if everything was ready to go and just had to take this picture of what the streets looked like in under an hour.

Good thing that came out of this unexpected snowfall is that for the day, sales (even online sales) for dress and hiking boots were really good!

WooHoo!! And then on Saturday night, like most of the world (and universe, and parallel spent the evening preparing for and watching the 50th Anniversary episode of Doctor Who, entitled “Day of the Doctor”  and the build-up was great and the episode did not disappoint me in anyway! In my opinion, it actually paid great homage to the history of the show, and as to why it has been such an enduring fixture on BBC networks (and I am so glad that they also decided to carry it on BBC America!) For those who may have not seen it yet, I will not go into a review at this moment, because even a little review gives away to much of the pleasure of watching it for the first time. All I will say is that, when you do watch it, have “pen and paper” at the ready, there are lots and lots of “timey wimey” stuff going on and so many references to past episodes (and future ones) that you may get lost!

After much debate and intensive reading, have decided to finally purchase my first gaming system. Yep, one of the few people that have never owned one! And for my first one, I will be going with the Microsoft Xbox One. Reasoning behind my choice is that, I have been a longtime user of the Windows platforms and Microsoft hardware (mice, keyboards, and the like). As such, have been pleased with their performance. Also, was intrigued with the Xbox One interface, having enjoyed using the Logitech Revue Google TV platform. This platform seemed to be the closet to that type of interface and integration. Earlier this week, got my “hands wet” by dipping into the whole game ecosystem with the purchase of the free level of “Asphalt 7” from the Windows 8.1 store, and have enjoyed playing it on my laptop, so I can just imagine how it will look on my big screen television.

Now have to go clean up the kitchen from making my Sunday dinner – Garlic parmesan red potatoes wedges, oven fried chicken and steamed veggies! ( good). Get ready for Monday and then relax by catching the late night showing of one all my all-time “shoot-em-up” movies “The Replacement Killers” with Chow Yun-Fat and Maria Sorvino. Just one on “got to watch it every time it’s on” kind of movies. So, have a good night, get some rest and have a great and productive week!

Surprise Gifts from Microsoft & Google!

Been quite a surprising week so far! Checked my Twitter feed the other day and found that I had received a gift card from Microsoft! This came as a result of just posting a picture of my new “Start Screen” from upgrading to Windows 8.1. Now, how did Microsoft know that I wanted a new Surface Pro 2!..Hmm?? (LOL)
Second, fun gift this week, got a notice from my Gmail account that because I am an active Google+ user and poster, that I am eligible for a “vanity URL” for my account!. What this means is that I can now tell people that they can find my Google+ profile page just by typing “”! To me, I think it’s pretty cool to have what google calls a “vanity URL”

Thirdly, was surfing YouTube the other day and saw the trailer for “X-Men, Days of Future Past” and from what I have seen, the movies is going be quite a show! And now, I can’t wait until the movie hits theatres!

Well, that is it for now fellow bloggers. Remember, have fun, smile a lot, read a good book (when you have time) and most of all, always remember that to someone and for are important!
